Initiator HD Sunflower

Ole Langezaal

Security staff member Ole Langezaal is the initiator of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower project at LUMC. This project focuses on making people with invisible conditions visible. Ole speaks from personal experience: he has autism and understands how valuable recognition and understanding can be. He wants to share his positive experiences with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower more broadly, for both patients and staff.

"It was only later that I realized I'm okay just the way I am, with my own standards and values. That insight was a bright spot in my life."

How do you experience diversity and inclusion in your workplace?

Ole explains that the HD Sunflower project symbolizes inclusion and awareness for him. “Many conditions are not visible, yet people deal with them every day. It is important that not only patients but also staff recognize this. It benefits them as well, since it increases efficiency and strengthens social cohesion and connection.”

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a tool that allows you to indicate that you have a disability or condition that is not always visible. It signals that you may need help, understanding, or more time. For Ole, it goes beyond being a tool. “Vulnerability connects. Everyone shows their smile, but often there is more going on. By being open about your own vulnerability, you create space for others.”

Why is this topic personally important to you?

Ole shares that his motivation comes from personal experiences. He had a difficult childhood in which he was often judged by labels: that boy with this, that boy with that. “For a long time, I struggled with the question: am I even worthy? Only later did I realize that I am okay as I am, with my own norms and values. That insight was a light in my life.”

He emphasizes that he had to learn to let go. “It doesn’t have to be perfect. I live by the idea: yesterday is yesterday, tomorrow is tomorrow. Today I try to be the best version of myself. That brings me peace. By accepting what I cannot change, I gain the courage to change what I can.”

How does this show in your work?

Ole explains that his role as a security officer brings him into contact with various cultures and people every day. “You never know what you’ll encounter. Diversity is always present.” According to Ole, awareness of invisible conditions is essential. “You might not see it, but it’s there. If you take that into account in your approach, communication goes more smoothly. It’s not about preferential treatment or a free pass. It’s about respectful and efficient interaction.” Communication is key. “If you don’t talk to each other, it lingers in the air. But once you truly communicate clearly, understanding and respect arise. And that is exactly what the HD Sunflower project is about: showing that there is space for each other.”
