Management Assistant

Matthias Broekmans

Since 2022, Matthias Broekmans has been working as a management assistant at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care (PHEG), at the Leiden Health Campus in The Hague.

“There’s still a lot to gain in raising awareness. On the other hand: there are plenty of negative experiences people have that I don’t see happening at LUMC.”

How do you experience diversity and inclusion in your workplace?

“In my own workplace, I feel very comfortable as a rainbow colleague. I can be who I am without any issues, and that feels good. In general, within LUMC, there could still be more attention to what it really means to have an inclusive work environment. Think of how to inclusively address colleagues, providing gender-neutral restrooms or learning how to have inclusive conversations with patients and colleagues.

On the other hand, there are also many negative experiences I have never encountered at LUMC. For example, using the word ‘gay’ as an insult or to describe something negative. I’ve never heard that within LUMC, and I don’t expect it to happen either. That’s something to be proud of!”

Which elements of our work culture currently make you happy or proud?

“I find it heartwarming that so many LUMC colleagues show their support for the rainbow community by wearing the rainbow lanyard. These colleagues consciously choose to make their support visible. That takes courage, and I think that’s really brave!

Another element is Leiden Pride. Every year, we receive many applications to join the LUMC boat during the Canal Pride. I can feel the support for our community as I walk through the building.”

What does your ideal inclusive workplace look like?

“I would love to see more opportunities within LUMC to connect with like-minded colleagues. As an LUMC employee, I think it would be wonderful to meet such colleagues, so that I’d have people to fall back on – not only when facing negative experiences but also to celebrate our community together.”

“Colleagues consciously choose to show their support for our community. I think that’s really brave!”
