“It is important that people are not judged by their background or disability. Everyone deserves appreciation for who they are and what they do.”
How do you experience diversity and inclusion in your workplace?
Ebi shares that his Polish background and accent initially made him stand out from his colleagues. “People had to get used to my way of speaking and my tone. In the beginning, this was not always accepted. By communicating openly and working together, their understanding increased.” He notices that awareness of diversity differs per department: “In policy functions there is more attention for differences than in other work environments, where unconscious stigmatization occurs more often. In those cases, it is one person’s word against another’s, and filing a complaint doesn’t always help.”
Ebi emphasizes that recognition for work is more important than special treatment. “I don’t expect extra attention because I am Polish. Everyone should deliver good work and be recognized for it, regardless of background or identity.”
How does this show up in your work?
Ebi works independently but supports many different departments and colleagues. “I often arrange things for which others don’t have time. The wide scope of my tasks makes the work challenging and attractive.”
What does the ideal inclusive workplace look like for you?
“That is a place where people feel safe and are not immediately judged by origin, gender, or preferences. Everyone should be heard and have the space to be themselves. Listening and asking questions are key words. It’s about awareness on all levels, so that prejudice does not determine daily interactions.”
Which elements of the work culture currently make you happy or proud?
Ebi appreciates that LUMC pays attention to raising awareness of diversity and inclusion and sees small changes as valuable: “It is important that people learn to respect each other and be aware of differences. In this way, small groups of employees can positively influence the behavior of others and contribute to a more respectful work culture.
