In soft shades of grey, characteristics that we often place in opposition to one another blend seamlessly together. Masculine and feminine do not exist here as opposites, but as parts of a whole.
It reminds us that gender identity does not always fit neatly into clear categories. For many people within the LUMC Pride community, life is an amalgamation of things that others believe should not coexist. At the LUMC, you do not have to choose between one or the other. You can be undefined, somewhere in between, or a little bit of everything, and still be completely yourself.

About the work
Marijn Akkermans (1975) makes portraits that he draws with pencil, ink and gouache on paper. In transparent greys, he manages to evoke a special, somewhat indefinable world.
Akkermans' interest is in contrasts such as masculinity/femininity, youth/old age and heterosexuality/homosexuality. In his work, time dissolves and contradictions form a coherent whole. In doing so, he allows different perspectives to come together. The person in this work looks at you with interest but also with distance.
