Algemene interne geneeskunde

De interne geneeskunde houdt zich bezig met bijna alle organen van het lichaam. Ziekten die de internist behandelt zijn onder meer: nierziekten, bloedziekten, infectieziekten, maag-, darm- en leverziekten, kanker, en ziekten die met uw hormonen en stofwisseling te maken hebben. Een internist heeft ook kennis van longaandoeningen en hartziekten.

Door zijn brede basiskennis kijkt de internist verder dan 1 orgaan. De internist behandelt niet alleen specifieke ziekten maar ook als niet duidelijk is wat er met u aan de hand is, wordt u verwezen naar een internist. Die probeert de oorzaak van uw klachten te achterhalen.

Na de diagnose adviseert de internist u een behandeling. Een groot gedeelte van onze zorg gebeurt op de polikliniek maar het kan zijn dat u zo ziek bent dat u opgenomen moet worden op een van onze afdelingen of dat u gezien moet worden op de spoedeisende hulp.  De internist kan u doorverwijzen naar een andere medisch specialist, zoals een chirurg of longarts, of de behandeling weer overdragen aan uw huisarts.  De internist blijft echter vaak bij uw behandeling betrokken en houdt het overzicht, zeker als u meerdere specialisten bezoekt.  Wij proberen altijd een behandelplan op maat te maken.

De afdeling Interne Geneeskunde van het LUMC organiseert binnen de regio Leiden de opleiding tot internist en het coschap Beschouwend.

Voor het onderwijs worden vanuit Interne Geneeskunde in de bacheloropleiding geneeskunde een aantal onderwijsblokken georganiseerd, evenals een aantal lijnonderdelen.

Bij de Master geneeskunde organiseert de Interne Geneeskunde  het coschap Beschouwend  een semi-arts stage en het dedicated schakeljaar.

De afdeling levert ook een grote bijdrage aan de bachelor- en masteropleidingen Biomedische Wetenschappen en Klinische Technologie. 

The LUMC is not only a center of care, but also of scientific research. We want to further increase our knowledge through scientific research, so our care for our current and future patients continues to improve. To this end, the LUMC participates in large, international studies.

It is good for the development of new knowledge if as many patients as possible participate in the LUMC research. It is precisely these studies that provide reliable knowledge.

As a patient, you can benefit from the fact that the latest medicines are tested with us. If standard medicines do not work well for you, an experimental medicine may have or may even have a better effect. These resources are only offered in a study context. If your situation lends itself to it and you meet the criteria, you can participate in these clinical scientific studies. You can ask your doctor, but the treatment team will also discuss the treatment options with you.

The clinical research of the Department of Internal Medicine is carried out by the Clinical Research Unit of Internal Medicine (KRIG). According to strict research protocols, your data and, for example, blood are collected here for scientific studies. The examination takes place in an easily accessible room with specific equipment. A team of specially trained nurses and doctor's assistants will guide you through this examination.

Participation is always voluntary. You sign a statement of approval, the informed consent. If you no longer wish to participate, you can always withdraw your consent without stating a reason. A doctor or nurse will take body material from you. After this, the KRIG team ensures rapid processing and analysis of the material, and possibly storage for later use.

Research protocols

The research protocols of the studies have always been checked and approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the LUMC. In addition, a lot of attention is paid to good care and quality assurance: the KRIG has a Qualicor accreditation, which means that it is recognized as a high-level healthcare institution.
