The Center for Microbiome Analyses and Therapeutics (CMAT) at the LUMC promotes and facilitates a wide range of aspects in human microbiome research. CMAT’s approach is to give support by tailoring its services to your research requirements. We have an extensive track record of internal and external collaborations.

About us

The Center for Microbiome Analyses and Therapeutics is embedded in the department of Medical Microbiology, which also hosts the Netherlands Donor Feces Bank (NDFB) and the Clostridioides difficile Expert Center. CMAT specializes in human gut microbiome research, with a focus on the bacteria and fungi in health and disease. We closely collaborate with the NDFB and with the shared facilities of the Leiden Bio Science Park, such as GenomeScan.

Study design

CMAT offers advice on local, national and international study design, subjects, sample size, sampling methods and storage conditions.

Sampling kits

We have the infrastructure in place to provide customized sampling kits for your research project. The sampling kits are ready-to-use and include instructions and materials for sampling and (room temperature or cooled) transport.

Study design

Sampling kits

We have the infrastructure in place to provide customized sampling kits for your research project. The sampling kits are ready-to-use and include instructions and materials for sampling and (room temperature or cooled) transport.

Sample processing

Samples can be aliquoted for DNA- and/or culture-based methods. DNA extraction will be performed according to our standard operating procedures, which are optimized for feces and for low biomass samples such as skin swabs and urine. We concentrate our efforts on quality control during DNA extraction and sequencing.

Sample storage

Storage during and after the experiment are of utmost importance for high quality data and reusability. As such, CMAT advises on making aliquots for DNA- and/or culture-based methods to make your research future-proof.

Next generation sequencing

CMAT collaborates with shared facilities of the Leiden Bio Science Park, such as GenomeScan. We will be the intermediary for your research project. The microbiome sequencing options include:

  • 16S rRNA gene sequencing
  • ITS2 sequencing
  • Shotgun metagenomic sequencing

Bioinformatic support

Microbiome sequencing data generates intricate data. We have the bioinformatic skills and infrastructure in place to help you answer your research questions. Moreover, CMAT makes sequencing data accessible and stimulates re-use of previously collected data.
