The SPES/SCOPA is a short, reliable, and valid scale that can adequately be used in both research and clinical practice. It consists of three sections: motor impairments, Activity-of-Daily-Living functions, and motor complications. There are four response options, ranging from 0 (normal) to 3 (severe). The various sections of the instrument show high correlations with related sections of the MDS-UPDRS, but administration of the SPES/SCOPA is less time-consuming.
Nevertheless, more recently, the Movement Disorders Society sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) has become the standard tool in the clinical evaluation of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). A conversion formula to convert SPES/SCOPA motor scores into MDS-UPDRS part III scores (and vice versa) are available.
