Mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases
In this research project we study the use of mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. We explore the potential of stem cells to treat luminal disease and the complications of inflammatory bowel diseases, like perianal fistulas. Both cell models (like organoids, so called mini-guts) and animal models are used to investigate the effect of stem cells both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, also clinical trials are performed in this research project to explore the safety and effectiveness of stem cell therapy in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.
