Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition

The LIBC is an interfaculty center for interdisciplinary research on brain and cognition. The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and the Faculties of Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavioural Sciences of Leiden University participate in the LIBC.

 Interdisciplinary Research

  • initiates and coordinates high-quality, multidisciplinary research on brain and cognition, carried out by researchers working in the participating faculties.
  • takes care of the set-up and management of excellent research infrastructures.
  • initiates and develops proposals for joint research programmes between parties from the participating faculties.


  • contributes to and supports the training and supervision of PhD students in the area of brain and cognition.
  • develops and offers interdisciplinary, inter-faculty courses and course programmes in the area of brain and cognition.

Public interest

  • provides information about brain and cognition research for the public
  • stimulates the public interest by organizing public symposia and lectures

LIBC Hotspots

The LIBC network covers various interdisciplinary approaches to studying the relationship between brain and cognition. The research topics range from language processing to cognitive robotics, and from psychiatric disorders to neuro-pharmacology. Particulary strong and fruitful interactions across departements and faculties are organized around so-called 'hotspots'.
