Milena Bellin, PhD is a Senior Researcher at the Department of Anatomy and Embryology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands. She did her PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology of the Development at the University of Padua, Italy. She was next able to pursue her long-standing interest in human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) biology and merge it with her expertise in cardiac genetics by joining the group of Prof. K-L. Laugwitz at the Technical University of Munich, Germany; she described one of the first hPSC models of long-QT syndrome (LQTS). After receiving a personal IEF Marie Curie Fellowship, she joined Prof. C. Mummery’s laboratory, where she derived the first cardiac isogenic hPSC pairs for unravelling the molecular mechanisms underlying the type-2 LQTS. By applying precise gene targeting technology she also generated a hPSC-derived model to study the very rare and recessive Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome. To leverage these specific and isogenic disease lines she is collaborating with the Leiden Academic Center for Drug Research to screen and identify cardio-active molecules that could revert pathological phenotypes. The group lead by Dr. Bellin’s is now using patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells and gene targeting for cardiac disease modelling, for developing hPSC-based platforms to be implemented in the drug-screening and in the safety testing processes, and for generating 3D cardiac microtissues.
