Beerend Hierck studied Medical Biology at the University of Amsterdam and did his PhD study on the role of retinoic acid and integrins, especially α6β1 and α6β4, and laminins in heart development at Leiden University. As a postdoc at the LUMC he studied the role of DGCR6, one of the genes involved in DiGeorge Syndome, in heart development. In 1998 he became faculty at the department of Anatomy and Embryology at the LUMC. His research focussed on the relation between shear forces and endothelial function.
He has an important task as Anatomy and Developmental Biology teacher and was awarded the Prof. Dr Tammelingprijs as best LUMC teacher in 2010 ánd in 2013. In 2014 he was awarded as “best teacher of Leiden University”. As educational innovator he became fellow of the Leiden Teachers Academy in 2014, which he chaired for 2 years. In 2016 he became member of the Center for Educational Innovation at the LUMC where his research focuses on 3D learning and the role of Augmented Reality (AR). In 2016 he won, together with the Centre for Innovation of Leiden University, the SURF Innovation Challenge Award 2016-2017 with an interactive AR-HoloLens application for higher Medical Education. Since 2017 he is fellow at the Centre for Innovation at Leiden University. In juli 2017 he was finalist at the TEDxAmsterdamED awards with the DynamicAnatomy app for HoloLens (see https://www.mr4education.com/).
