of Medical Microbiology
Introduction
The Department of Medical Microbiology (chairman: prof.dr.
A.C.M. Kroes) consists of three laboratories:
- Molecular Virology
- Experimental Microbiology
- Clinical Microbiology
The activities of the department
(housing around 120 persons) include diagnostics,
research, teaching and residence training. The department is primarily
responsible for all microbiological services within the Leiden University
Medical Center, which is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital
offering a wide range of advanced patient care facilities, including most
categories of organ and bone marrow transplantation. The laboratory also
has a regional role in providing microbiological services for primary
medical care and other hospitals.
The research at the department is aimed at understanding the (molecular) interactions
between pathogens and the host. This research is performed at different
levels: from molecular genetics of the pathogens to molecular diagnostics
and from molecular epidemiology to the development of vaccines.
The department is involved
in the University education programs of Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and
Life Science and Technology and the training programme of the
"Hogeschool Leiden".
The department participates
within the LUMC in the training programmes for medical specialist. The
training program for medical microbiologist comprises 5 years and covers
all aspects necessary for this specialization: bacteriology, virology,
parasitology and mycology, both at the level of laboratory diagnostics as
well as the clinical problems of infections and therapy.
