Patient care
Diagnostics
The Department of Medical Microbiology also
includes a separate section devoted to the diagnostics of infectious diseases,
the Clinical Microbiological Laboratory (CML). This laboratory is primarily
responsible for all microbiological services within the Leiden University
Medical Center, which is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital offering a
wide range of advanced patient care facilities, including most categories of
organ and bone marrow transplantation. The laboratory also has a regional role
in providing microbiological services for primary medical care and other
hospitals.
The Clinical Microbiological Laboratory is
divided into five laboratory units and a central Reception and Administrative
unit.
Laboratory units within the Clinical
Microbiological Laboratory are:
| The Bacteriology Laboratory |
Diagnosis
of bacterial infections by microscopy and culture, determination of
antibiotic sensitivities |
| The Virology Laboratory |
Diagnosis of
viral infections by antigen detection and viral culture |
| The Parasitology Laboratory |
Diagnosis
of parasitic infections by microscopy and antigen detection |
| The Serological Laboratory |
Diagnosis
of infectious diseases by antibody and antigen detection in serum |
| The Molecular Biology
Laboratory
|
Diagnosis of infectious diseases by the detection of nucleic acid, including
the further qualitative and quantitative analysis of these infections |
The Clinical Microbiological Laboratory
employs a wide range of techniques for optimal support of the LUMC patient care.
Special emphasis is on:
- the early diagnosis of viral infections in the
immunocompromised host
- the bacteriological monitoring of selective
bowel decontamination
- parasitological serology
- HIV drug resistance testing
- molecular diagnosis of respiratory infections
Personnel of the Clinical
Microbiological Laboratory
Around 60 persons are active within the
Laboratory, including staff members, technicians, administrative staff, doctors
in training for specialization in medical microbiology and researchers projects in the field of clinical
microbiology.
