Weer 'n aardig boekje gelezen

Searching skills toolkit: finding the evidence van Caroline de Brún en Nicola Pearce-Smith (2009) is een interessante poging om kort en bondig het vinden van evidence-based literatuur te vergemakkelijken. Aan de ene kant is de poging geslaagd (essentiële bronnen worden genoemd, en specifieke zoekmogelijkheden besproken), maar aan de andere kant is het ook een beetje een omgevallen boekenkast: veel te veel in een te kleine letter. Maar toch nuttig voor de zoekprofessional om haar/zijn ervaring&kennis te toetsen.

Weer 'n leuk boek gelezen
Never mind the web : here comes the book van Miha Kovac (2008) buigt zich over het mysterie van de (voorlopige?) mislukking van het e-book. Naast interessante historische lijnen, schetst de schrijver de culturele, sociale en bedrijfskundige omstandigheden van de ontwikkeling van het (e-)boek in Europa en de VS.
Twee citaten:

• "...together with librarians who are already evolving into a new type of information professional. Namely, it is hard to imagine that even in a world dominated by e-books and e-documents, the need for storing paper books would disappear completely and that there would be no need for professionals who know how to organise, store and retrieve published knowledge in digital format" (p. 160).

• "But until then, if there were no printed book, the Internet civilisation would simply have to invent it. At least for those rare occassions on which it wished to say something serious" (p. 169).

Leuk boek gelezen.
Access to medical knowledge : libraries, digitization, and the public good (2007) is een interessant boek van medisch bibliothecaris Frances K. Groen. Ze geeft aandacht aan vier thema's:

• - de beroepswaarden van bibliothecarissen

• - de geschiedenis van medische bibliotheken

• - medische bibliotheken & internet

• - ontwikkelingen zoals open access en auteursrecht

Een kort verslag van deze vier delen:

Deel 1: beroepswaarden van bibliothecarissen

Groen ziet drie beroepswaarden:

1. verzorgen van toegang tot informatie voor diegenen die dit nodig hebben: informatie als (schaars) goed met een prijs.

2. "empowering" en onderwijzen van eindgebruikers: alfabetisme/informatievaardig.

3. wijsheid uit het verleden bewaren: conservering en digitalisering.

Deel 2: geschiedenis van medische bibliotheken

Aardig hoofdstuk maar niet meer dan dat - niet essentieel om te lezen.

Deel 3: medische bibliotheken en internet.

Het eerste hoofdstuk gaat over de historische ontwikkeling van internet en het tweede hoofdstuk bespreekt patiënteninformatie. Beide hoofdstukken zijn misschien aardig maar zeker niet essentieel. Het laatste hoofdstuk bespreekt "new approaches to clinical medical information," maar begint met name weer over het minder interessante patiënteninformatie. Dit hoofdstuk vervolgt met de geschiedenis van The Informationist tot Clinical Librarian, een inmiddels bekend en breed toegepast concept in de medische bibliotheekwereld. De toekomst van het clinical librarianship zal de toegang tot de informatie zijn - de uitdaging voor de collectievormers. Dit deel 3 eindigt met het naïeve idee dat alle informatie gratis beschikbaar via internet wordt.

Deel 4: de vraag: Is there a better way?

Dit laatste deel bestaat uit vier deelthema's: 

• prijs: enorme prijsstijging van tijdschriften leidt tot selectie/keuze/toename IBL. Later: consortia-deals en Big Deals-licenties. Dit hoofdstuk (9) geeft een helder en vaak herkenbaar beeld van de evolutie van tijdschriftenaanschaf in medische bibliotheken.

• Open Access (OA) : de enorme prijsstijgingen leiden tot OA. Die prijsstijgingen gaan gepaard met de invloed van met name de Citation Index van Eugene Garfield op de betere terugvindbaarheid en 'branding' van tijdschriften. Ander effect hiervan is de eenwording van collecties: bibliotheken hebben steeds vaker dezelfde collectie en onderscheiden zich minder sterk van elkaar doordat met allemaal de high-impact-journals koopt. Rekensom: prijsstijgingen+electronic journals=OA.

• "betere manieren voor het toegankelijk maken van informatie" - de titel dekt niet de lading van dit deel. Een historisch overzicht (van het eerste wetenschappelijk tijdschrift tot en met de opkomst van OA en repositories) leidt tot de conclusie dat OA/Repositories de betere manieren zijn - niet geheel overtuigend gebracht.

• Copyright. Door het snelle web hebben wetenschappers/auteurs geen tijd om zich druk te maken over auteursrecht. Tot welke grens reikt "fair use", bijv. bij interbibliothecaire leveranties? Hoe zal 't in de toekomst gaan? Zal de druk van de uitgevers toenemen? De bibliotheken horen hun gebruikers auteursrechtwijs te maken, dat is wel zeker.

Conclusies van Groen zijn: 

• bibliothecarissen werken met een publiek goed ("toegankelijk maken van informatie")

• de bibliothecaire toekomst is onzeker door de snelheid en de multitude van veranderingen

• medische bibliothecarissen zijn sinds de jaren '60 deel uitgaan maken van de kliniek

• bibliothecarissen zijn een belangrijk deel van de informatieketen

• de huidige ontwikkelingen geven veel ruimte voor innovatie

Volgens Groen moet de bibliothecaris actiever worden op de volgende terreinen:

• onderhandelingen met uitgevers

• Open Access-modellen ondersteunen

• Institutionele Repositories regelen

• bevordering van gezondheid met klinische en patiënteninformatie (de informatiespecialist als UpToDate of ClinicalEvidence)

• preservatie van informatie: voorbeelden van ontbrekende artikelen in online versies van tijdschriften. Hoe bewaar je eigenlijk online journals? Is er een garantie dat ergens het laatste exemplaar wordt bewaard?

In de categorie raar: de producenten van het Amerikaanse bestand POPLINE (db.jhuccp.org/ics-wpd/popweb) -een bestand op het gebied van voorplantingsgeneeskunde- is onlangs het woord ABORTION tot stopwoord verklaard, d.w.z. vergelijkbaar met woorden als THE, AN en AND, en zodoende geeft deze term nul referenties.
De makers zeggen:
"Yes we did make a change in POPLINE.  We recently made all abortion terms stop words.  As a federally funded project, we decided this was best for now.  In addition [...] you could try using ‘Fertility Control, Postconception’.  This is the broader term to our ‘Abortion’ terms and most records have both in the keyword fields.  Also, adding ‘unwanted w2 pregnancy’ in place of aborti*."
Ze zeggen niet wat de reden van deze ingreep is. Het lijkt erop dat de Amerikaanse politiek het woord heeft verboden (www.usaid.gov/our_work/global_health/pop/restrictions.html en www.prochoiceamerica.org/assets/files/Abortion-Access-to-Abortion-Refusal-Clauses-Global-Gag.pdf). POPLINE is "funded by the United States Agency for International Development. (USAID)"

Fulltext-zoeken
Voor bepaalde vragen (bijv. naar heel specifieke begrippen) is het handig om naast de reguliere bestanden (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science) andere systemen te kunnen raadplegen. Vooral de zoekmachines bij de grote uitgevers kunnen uitkomst bieden:

Mare-top-tienen
In de Mare van 13 december 2007 staan drie top-tienen van meest geciteerde Leidse wetenschappers. Er kleven enkele onrechtmatigheden aan deze lijstjes. Ik schreef aan Mare: Zoals Thed van Leeuwen al aangeeft zijn artikelen van vóór 1980 niet meegenomen, want deze komen niet in zijn database voor. Zijn CWTS-bestand begint met artikelen vanaf 1981. In Leiden hebben we echter (betaalde) online toegang tot de gehele Web of Science die referenties vanaf 1945 indexeert (het deelbestand met artikelen van vóór die datum is niet aangeschaft). Voor eenieder in Leiden met toegang tot het netwerk van de UL of het LUMC is het vrij eenvoudig om een zoekactie te doen naar citatiescores. Ik heb dit ook even gedaan ("quick&dirty") met de Mare-top-tienen in gedachte. Dit levert voor de top-tienen voor Geneeskunde en de Exacte Wetenschappen interessante zaken op. Allereerst is in de Geneeskunde een Leids artikel uit 1973 dik dubbel zo vaak geciteerd als de nummer één in de Mare Geneeskunde Top 10. En voor de Exacte Wetenschappen kan ik op deze wijze vier artikelen vinden die ontbreken in de Mare-top-10, maar die eigenlijk in deze top 10 thuishoren op de posities 1, 4, 5 en 9.
Helaas, de Mare is niet geïnteresseerd om deze gegevens toe te voegen.

NEJM makkelijker Open Access
Al sedert 2001 zijn original research articles in de N Engl J Med vanaf 1993 maar ouder dan een half jaar gratis beschikbaar. Men moest slechts één horde overwinnen indien men het tijdschrift vanaf vanaf een ongeautoriseerde PC het tijdschrift las: het aanmaken van een gebruikersnaam was noodzakelijk. Vana 19-12-2007 is dit niet meer nodig: de artikelen zijn nu rechtstreeks fulltext beschikbaar. Voor de goede orde: de Walaeus Bibliotheek heeft een abonnement, dus het tijdschrift is vanaf geautoriseerde PCs volledig toegankelijk vanaf 1993.

Erg interessant en handig: "The JISC Academic Database Assessment Tool (ADAT) aims to help libraries to make informed decisions about future subscriptions to bibliographic databases. Een nieuw rapport van de Publishing Research Consortium over Open Access:  "A major study of librarian purchasing preferences has shown that librarians will show a strong inclination towards the acquisition of Open Access (OA) materials as they discover that more and more learned material has become available in institutional repositories. The study, which took the form of conjoint and attitudinal surveys, shows that librarians are very sensitive to quality, content cost, the version of the content and how immediately the content is made available." Mmm, wat is dat precies, de "acquisition of Open Access materials." Conclusie lijkt gebaseerd op wishful thinking.

Gaat de ISI het probleem van Author Disambiguation aanpakken? Zoeken op auteursnamen kent  lastige valkuilen (verschillende naamsvormen van één auteur, één naamsvorm die betrekking heeft op meerdere personen. Een webbericht van het gereedschap Author Finder lijkt deze vraag bevestigend te beantwoorden. In de periode juni-december 2006 zou deze functie worden uitgerold in de Web of Science.

• De Medical Library Association heeft een primer op het gebied van Open Access gepubliceerd. Het is een introductie voor beginners.

In de BMJ van 24/12/2005 wordt een oproep gedaan om een Google Medicine te maken: een zoeksysteem dat bijv. PubMed kan vervangen. Over Google en Google Scholar in relatie met zoeken naar medische literatuur: "Google Scholar should of course never be used in isolation. However, it is a useful addition to PubMed, Cochrane, and other trusted sources of information, such as the TRIP or UpToDate databases, or a good medical librarian." Vooral dit laatste is natuurlijk erg belangrijk.
