Education and study programs & Research

Education and research are closely interwoven in the study programs offered by Leiden University Medical Center.

In the academic setting of Leiden University, the Biomedical Sciences and Medicine degree programs are characterized by a focus on scientific study. Biomedical scientists are already prepared from early in the bachelor’s phase in theory and in practice for a career in research, but our future doctors are also familiarized in the Medical study program with the importance of research for clinical practice and with carrying out research themselves during a scientific internship. A significant number of the teachers carry out research themselves and use this research when teaching.

Developments in clinical research also have repercussions on teaching in further training and instruction for different professional groups in medicine, in nursing study programs, study programs for medical supporting careers and in continuing study programs in nursing. What is characteristic of the LUMC continued training and instruction courses is that they use state-of-the-art knowledge and facilities, interactive teaching methods, skills labs, electronic learning environment, and test methods. This means that new developments in scientific research are translated through to current continued training courses for and given by practicing doctors and research trainees/ PhD students.
