The Faculty of Medicine of Leiden University and the Leiden Academic Hospital merged into LUMC in 1996. Aside from the historical background, the close collaboration between LUMC and the faculties of Leiden University is crucial for addressing important social issues. Therefore, Leiden University and LUMC cooperate in the following 6 clusters of science areas:
