Epidemiology en diagnostics
Research aim
The subgroup Epidemiology and Diagnostics has a long history of epidemiological and diagnostic research involving the whole spectrum of human parasitic infections. The group has a specific interest in intestinal protozoa and helminths. These parasites are highly prevalent in developing countries where they represent a leading cause of diarrhoea and anaemia. Currently, research focuses on applying DNA based technology to diagnostics in an effort to identify these clinically relevant parasites in human stool samples in a highly sensitive and specific way. Recently the group broadened its scope to include DNA detection of blood and tissue parasites as well.
