Diagnostics of parasitic infections

Routine diagnostics of parasitic infections and other patient related activities of the Department of Parasitology are integrated in the  Clinical Microbiological Laboratory (KML) of the Center of Infectious Diseases (see Contact). This laboratory consists of 5 sub laboratories amongst which the sub laboratory Parasitology. Besides conventional morphological determination, parasitic infections are also diagnosed based on molecular techniques (PCR) and serology. These analysis are conducted in their respective sub laboratories. Herein, The Department of Parasitology provides substantive guidance.

National parasitic reference laboratory

The Department of Parasitology functions as a national parasitological reference laboratory. (Dutch laboratories, hospitals, doctors or general practitioners can send in patient material for diagnostic analysis in the Clinical Medical Laboratory. Request forms for this can be found at the  Netherlands Society for Parasitology (NVP) website.

Further more, the department fulfils an important role in the national quality assessment of parasitological diagnostics within the ‘Stichting Kwaliteitsbewaking Medische Laboratoriumdiagnostiek’ ( SKML) and is actively involved in providing information about parasitic infections via (the website of) the  Netherlands Society for Parasitology (NVP)
