Professional biosketch

Lisette van Lieshout (1964) is heading the subgroup Epidemiology and Diagnostics at the Department of Parasitology, LUMC. She is a bio-medical researcher and has a position as associate professor in medical parasitology.
In 1987 she received an MSc in Medical Biology at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. Thereafter she spent three years in Egypt to perform diagnostic research on the human Schistosoma parasite, also the topic of her PhD thesis, published in 1996. After her return to the Netherlands in 1991 she was appointed at the Department of Parasitology in Leiden. During her career she participated in several collaborative research projects on the epidemiology of parasitic diseases, mostly in Africa. In 1999 she received the Merial Award for her innovative contributions to the fields of medical parasitology within the Benelux. She is co-author of more than 60 papers published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, and presents her work regularly at scientific conferences and meetings. 
 In addition she teaches clinical parasitology, both at the LUMC and external institutes, and organizes national and international specialized training courses on laboratory diagnosis of parasitic diseases. She supervises all parasitology related diagnostic activities at the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of the LUMC. Her group is well recognized as a national diagnostic reference centre, in particular for molecular detection of parasites in stool specimens. Since 2002 she chairs the parasitology section of the Netherlands external quality assessment scheme (SKML). In the period 2002-2007 she was member of the board of the Netherlands Society for Parasitology.
