Division of Image Processing

General Information

The Division of Image Processing, also known as the Laboratory for Clinical en Experimental Image processing (Dutch abbreviation: LKEB), is a division of the Department of Radiology. The director of the division is Prof. Johan H.C. Reiber, PhD.

Goal of the division in a broad sense is the research, implementation and validation of image processing approaches which allow the objective and reproducible assessment of objects in medical images using automated segmentation techniques following a formalized Software Development Process (SDP).

The division is subdivided into a total of five sections, being:

IVUS, CTA and Molecular Imaging

Vascular and Molecular Imaging

Section head: Jouke Dijkstra, PhD

Knowledge Based Image Processing

Knowledge Based Image Processing

Section head: Boudewijn P.F. Lelieveldt, PhD

CardioVascular MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Section head: Rob J. van der Geest, MSc

Neuro Image Processing

Neuro-Image Processing

Section head: Julien R Milles, PhD

Orthopaedics&Pulmonology

Orthopaedie & Longziekten

Section head: Berend C. Stoel, PhD

 Core Competence of LKEB

  • The translation of a medical imaging problem into a practical, clinically applicable technical solution
  • Development of scientifically innovative automated analysis methods (segmentation, quantification, classification) for medical images
  • Development of “physician friendly” user interfaces and visualization tools
  • Extensive clinical validation, beta testing and scientific publication

Industrial Links

The LKEB is closely linked to two companies, being Medis medical imaging systems bv and BioClinica, Inc. While LKEB specializes on the Research of the medical imaging applications, Medis specializes on the further Development of such and other research into analytical software packages that can be distributed and supported worldwide, and Bio-Clinica on the Applications of these techniques in clinical trials. The three, although independent, entities together form a strong Application Center in medical imaging.

In addition, LKEB is associated with the  Netherlands Forum for Biomedical Imaging (NFBI), for organizing symposia, workshops and courses on biomedical image processing and simulating collaboration between image-processing specialists, physicians and industry.
